How to produce a high quality piston?

The production process of engine pistons can be roughly divided into the following steps:

1. ** Material selection ** : The material of the piston needs to meet the low thermal expansion coefficient, small density, sufficient high temperature strength and good wear reduction performance, wear resistance and corrosion resistance, as well as good manufacturability.

The commonly used material is ZL109 aluminum alloy.

2. ** Blank forming ** : The production of aluminum piston blank is usually by metal gravity casting method, which can ensure high precision of blank size, high productivity and low cost.

For the complex piston cavity, the metal core can be divided by multi-piece mold, but this method may produce defects such as thermal cracking, porosity, pinhole and porosity.

3. ** Forging ** : In enhanced engines, forged aluminum alloy pistons may be used, which have fine grains, good metal streamline distribution, high strength, and good thermal conductivity.

The forging process has strict requirements on piston structure shape and high cost.

04

4. ** Machining ** : The machining of the piston includes turning, milling, drilling and other processes to ensure the precise size and shape of the piston.

05

5. ** Heat treatment ** : Heat treatment process can improve the hardness and wear resistance of the piston, usually including quenching and tempering steps.

06

6. ** Surface treatment ** : In order to improve the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the piston, surface treatment may be carried out, such as anodizing, electroplating or coating.

7. ** Assembly ** : The assembly of the piston includes the installation of the piston pin, piston ring and other components to the piston.

07

8. ** Inspection and testing ** : Finally, the finished piston needs to undergo rigorous inspection and testing to ensure that it meets the performance requirements of the engine.

These steps may vary depending on the specific piston design and production requirements, but the general process is similar.

In addition, the production of pistons may also involve the assembly of multiple parts that can be joined by sintering bonding, friction welding, brazing, flanging or pin joints.
