The benefits of forging pistons

Learn how forged pistons are manufactured, their unique properties, and their advantages over traditional cast pistons.

The difference between ordinary or cast pistons and forged pistons is manufacturing technology.

In terms of stock setup, most engine tuners and manufacturers consider traditional cast pistons to be good enough and have no shortcomings in compression and service life.

Casting pistons are most common in all mass-produced engines because the casting process used to make such pistons provides low-cost opportunities for manufacturers.

Manufacturing technology

Casting pistons are manufactured using large specialized equipment composed of molds into which a mixture of aluminum, alloys, and silicone is poured to form the shape of the piston.

The forged piston is made of a single alloy blank, stamped by a die. The mold shape determines the size and shape of the piston.

Forged piston

Some engine applications may require a fly cut on top of the piston to assist with valve release, which can be easily achieved using forged pistons.

The manufacturing techniques used to make forged pistons make them stronger because more surface area is concentrated on their shape.

Forged pistons are also easy to manufacture because there is no need for large, heavy, and expensive casting equipment like that used in casting piston manufacturing. This does not necessarily mean that forging pistons is better than casting pistons.

 In fact, the technology used to make cast pistons is the most advanced compared to the methods used to forge alloys.

Characteristic

The main characteristics that make forged pistons stand out in high performance applications are strength and durability.

 The high silicon content of cast pistons makes them brittle compared to forged pistons. Silicon gives the metal lubricity and is mixed in the alloy to limit thermal expansion, which is the main reason casting pistons require careful handling.

A mild shock may cause the material to crack. The forging process compresses the molecules inside the alloy, which results in a denser surface area compared to the casting piston.
